Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback also known as EEG biofeedback refers to training of the brainwave patterns in the brain. These trainings assist the brain to function more efficiently. During training the individual responds to a display of their own brainwaves on the monitor.

QEEG / quantitative EEG analysis can assist in determining as what specific areas of the brain are dysregulated or over or under activated. Once this type of assessment identifies the problem areas, then an individualized treatment protocol / plan is created.

How does Neurofeedback work?

Training electrodes are placed on the client’s head and a neurofeedback instrument reads the brainwave frequencies which are displayed on the monitor. The neurofeedback program gives the client a visual and auditory feedback display to help the client increase or decrease the amplitudes of their brain waves. During training, the client learns to maintain their brainwave activity above or below a threshold set by their therapist. With repeated trainings desired improvements are noticed. Progress takes time but is long-lasting even after completion of treatments.

Can neurofeedback help me or someone I care about?

QEEG guided Neurofeedback therapy and our integrated approach can be used to enhance memory and focus, improve cognitive flexibility, memory, symptoms of anxiety & depression, improve migraines & headaches, improve sleep, mood, alleviate symptoms of chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, FASD, chronic fatigue, conversation disorder, TBI & OCD symptoms.

Can QEEG guided neurofeedback treatments improve cognitive performance?

In our experience most children & teenagers improve their academic grades, ACT, SAT scores and have done well in school.

Can children benefit from neurofeedback?

Yes. Neurofeedback treatments are routinely used for children to address symptoms of ADHD / ADD, ASD, Anxiety, depression, FASD, headaches, TBI, learning disabilities, sensory processing disorder and to enhance cognitive performance. Many parents are interested in neurofeedback treatments because either they are exploring alternative treatments to medications or if the medications are not being effective or the medications are causing side effects in their children.

At NITI we use multiple modalities to address symptoms related to above mentioned conditions.

Do I need QEEG?

Yes. If you are considering the NITI’s treatment approach then, an initial brain map (QEEG / quantative electroencephalogram analysis) is required to understand the primary concerns that may be causing the presenting problems. Brain map / QEEG is not a diagnostic assessment and assists in developing treatment protocols.

It is done by our board-certified licensed clinician in the office. EEG recording takes about an hour and needs some preparation. The QEEG report comes as 30-page report of eyes open and eyes closed assessment. Our

clinician will go over the results and answer any questions before starting the treatments. QEEG is repeated on as needed basis to assess the progress of treatments.

How long does training take?

The total duration of training varies from person to person, findings on the brain map, severity of the presenting problems, frequency of treatments and response to treatments. While most of our clients are able to train easily, some may find it more difficult and challenging and could take longer to train & improve. Some conditions like ASD, FASD, Fibromyalgia, MS, and Conversion Disorder may require more treatment sessions than others.

What to expect at the first visit?

At your first visit, you will meet with our board-certified neurofeedback specialist who will give you an overview of treatments including our unique integrated treatment approaches. He will be able to answer all your questions and give you a tour of the facility. If you are interested to proceed with the evaluation and treatments then you will be asked to complete all the paperwork?

Do your offer a free consultation?

Yes, NITI offers a free 30 minutes consultation so that the clients can make an informed decision.

How long is each session?

45 – 60 minutes.

What is integrated treatment approach?

Our Integrated treatment approach can include all or a combination of the following treatments depending on the presenting problems: psychotherapy, biofeedback, neurofeedback and physical therapy. Neurofeedback treatments helps in improving the brain’s functioning. Psychotherapy helps in addressing the difficulties with the mind. Biofeedback therapy / HeartRate Variability trainings creates a homeostasis with heart and brain. Physical therapy can assist in healing the body. Together, these modalities can create lasting change and recovery. Our integrated approach improves overall brain function so you can better engage in improving your quality of life and make healthy decisions for yourself.

How long will treatments last?

It depends upon the initial assessment / QEEG findings, severity of presenting problems, frequency and consistency of treatments, sensitivity or resilience to treatments. It also depends upon if it is an integrated treatment approach or just neurobiofeedback with counseling.

Will neurofeedback therapy change my personality?

No. our treatment approach / neurofeedback training sessions are designed to improve your brain’s connections, processing and communicate more efficiently. Over time the treatments will make you more calmer, improve your resiliency to stress, and help you think clearly. The trainings will not change your personality, your interests or who you are as a person.

Will I notice a difference right away?

While some clients will notice improvements in a few week, most will notice some positive changes in 3-4 weeks. This is provided that the clients attends treatments twice a week on a consistent basis.

Are neurofeedback session results long lasting?

Yes. Most of our clients who have completed our treatment protocols have noticed long-lasting improvements and do not need to return. However, some clients especially children and or teenagers may want to come back to check treatment progress and or return later on to address any new challenges.

Does brain mapping or neurofeedback training sessions interfere with current medications?

In fact, we encourage you to not stop taking medications. As treatments progress we will work with you and your physician to assess if you need to reduce dosage, change or taper off some of your meds.

Are there any side effects reported for neurofeedback?

No. If the treatments are done by a board certified (BCN) and licensed clinician based on a QEEG assessment then there should be no side effects to the treatments.

Is biofeedback the same as neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is also known as EEG biofeedback, Neurotherapy, neuro biofeedback depending upon the modalities that your clinician is utilizing. At NITI we also use biofeedback techniques that help our client in learning to regulate heart rate variability. Additionally, we use counseling strategies and consultation with parents / caregivers as needed to assist in reaching treatment goals.
